Oakville man is $10-M Lotto Max winner As a member of the Optimist Club of Oakville, Donald MacDonald has handed over a fair share of cheques to the club's many beneficiaries. On Tuesday, it was his turn to receive a cheque -- one worth $10 million as the winner of last Friday's Lotto Max jackpot. He wasn't aware of his good fortune until he overheard a clerk at a local shopping centre mention that someone in Oakville had a winning ticket for the $10-million jackpot. When he got home and started going over the numbers, he realized that he had a match for all seven numbers and was holding the golden ticket. "I took it into the store, but I had the clerk scan all my other $2 tickets first. When I handed her the Lotto Max ticket, she noticed I had circled the winning combo in coloured pencil, and start- ed to get excited," said the soft spoken 78-yearold man. "It wasn't until she scanned it and the machine said `winner' that we confirmed I had won the $10 million jackpot." MacDonald was born in Montreal, but has lived in Oakville since 1977. He is a proud participant and active volunteer with the Optimist Club of Oakville, helping young people in the community. See Winner page 9 Provincial officials are still scratching their heads over the origin and identity of a yellow slick found floating on the surface of Bronte Creek on Thursday. The slick was spotted in the creek in the area of Bronte and Speers Roads, Thursday evening. Town staff initially responded by setting up absorbent spill booms to stop the substance from flowing further down the creek. "It was a yellow-coloured substance and there was an odour to it. We believe it was some kind of oilbased substance," said Dan Cozzi, director of the Town's roads and works department. "Whether it is some kind of paint thinner or something we don't know. It's too early to tell." Ministry of the Environment (MOE) spokesperson Tina Dufresne said samples of the substance have been taken for analysis, but for the moment the substance remains a mystery. While both Town and Provincial officials are together in their concern about the slick, they are apart when it comes to where it originated.
