The two exhibits are Betty Goodwin: from the collection of Salah J. Bachir at the Gairloch Gardens location and Silent as Glue at the Centennial Square location. Both exhibits open Saturday, March 13. The Goodwin exhibit features the late artist's work from the collection of an avid art collector. Goodwin died two years ago at age 85. "Her work had a very strong influence on a younger generation of artists," said Marnie Fleming, who curated the exhibit. "She was connected to a moment when artists were beginning to think about the human body, both physically and emotionally." The exhibit will feature more than 20 pieces in print, collages, assemblages, paintings and sculptures created by the artist. "There's a lot of sadness to the work. There's a sense of mourning, but there's also a feeling of triumph in the sense that her work shows the various ways we struggle to survive," Fleming said. She noted a series of Goodwin's works about swimmers as an example "You don't know if the swimmers are drowning or if they're coming up for a breath of air. There's an ambiguity in her work." Goodwin was an artist for more than 40 years and in 2003 was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. "Her only son died in 1976 so she said making art is how she coped," Fleming said of Goodwin's inspiration. "Everything is left very open ended. There's no complete picture." Over at Centennial Square, Oakville Galleries is opening an exhibit of sculptures by Lynda Gammon, from Victoria, BC, Matt Harle, from Beacon, NY, and Elspeth Pratt, from Vancouver, BC.
