Some companies unaware of air quality bylaw Continued from page 2 3 · Wednesday, March 10, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Lauren More said Ford did not ask for an exemption to the air quality bylaw, but simply asked during the public consultation process if the bylaw would effect all Oakville businesses or just new ones. When asked about the effect the air quality bylaw would have on its business, More would only say, "Ford of Canada adheres to the required environmental regulations and will continue to remain in full compliance." More would not specify whether the company sees the air quality bylaw as a required environmental regulation. More also talked about some of the environmentally-friendly modifications Ford has made to the Oakville Assembly Plant. "Ford is implementing an industry-leading fumes-to-fuel research project at the Oakville Assembly Complex," said More. "This research is helping to convert fumes from the plant's paint shop into energy using advanced fuel cell technology. The energy produced is recycled back into the plant for its operations." Reaction to the air quality bylaw and the level of understanding of its effects have been mixed throughout QUALITY INTEGRITY Oakville's business community, particularly among the industries and facilities who may be labeled major emitters by it. Murray Scott, the Oakville plant manager of Siegwerk Canada Inc., stated he was unaware of the bylaw. Siegwerk Canada Inc. is an ink manufacturer whose Oakville facility is listed by the NPRI as producing 1.8 tonnes of VOC per year. "I've heard something men- tioned, but I don't know anything about it and how we would fit under it," he said. "Obviously, we currently pass all the laws that currently exist and submit all our information and we are within the government OAKVILLE'S MAJOR EMITTERS Permitted Ford Mancor (Speers) Dufferin Const. VALUE guidelines." Controller Mark Wetselaar, of Oakville's Con-Cast Pipe Inc., Ontario Concrete Products facility said the company is concerned about the new bylaw, but plans to cooperate with it. The NPRI has recorded the ConCast Pipe Inc., Oakville facility as producing 359 kilograms of PM 2.5 per year. "It's more cost to us because we have to maintain the yard closer to make sure no dust gets up. We have to oil the yard and that type of thing to keep the dust down," said Wetselaar. "We are going to try and work with the city on this and try to stay within the law." Wetselaar said that since the NPRI's 2008 report, the company has put down different bedding within its work yard in an effort to reduce its emissions and as a result may no longer be considered a major emitter. Ted Taylor, the safety, health and environment manager for the surfactants and detergent product manufacturer Jempak GK Inc., disagreed with his company being labeled a major emitter, but said the company would attempt to comply with the bylaw.
