Staff are recommending council members finally trash the concept for a bridge, which was to have connected Bronte Harbour Heritage Waterfront Park to Bronte Beach, both located south of Lakeshore Road West. The bridge had been included in the 1992 master plan for Bronte Harbour, an 18-year, $20 million plan to dump fill into the outer harbour to the east of Bronte Creek and south of Ontario Street to create a 25-acre park and marina. While the latter two items became reali- ty in the following years, the proposed bridge has never made it off the ground. "To date, this concept has never been significantly explored due to the anticipated costs and the feasibility of a pedestrian-only structure that must accommodate tall mast boats (i.e. swing or lift bridge) which use the Bronte Inner Harbour Marina," Regional staff explained in a report last year. "It's also community desire," added Ron Glenn, Halton's chief planner in an interview Tuesday. "The whole community desire to build a bridge really wasn't there." Regional staff are now recommending the $342,000 that has been set aside in previous budgets for the bridge be given to the Town of Oakville to help the municipality complete its own master plan for the Bronte Harbour Heritage Waterfront Park, which extends from the mouth of Bronte, or Twelve Mile, Creek to the Lighthouse restaurant. In total, the Region would contribute $520,000 to the estimated $1.6 to $2 million project, with the Town of Oakville picking up the rest of the cost. The Region's money would be used to resolve site settling and ponding issues west of the Lighthouse restaurant. Drug investigation nets three arrests Halton Regional Police Service has arrested three men and seized drugs, cash and a luxury sports car after an investigation of drug trafficking in the area. The service's Guns and Gangs Unit arrested two men for drug-related offences in Oakville on Feb. 25. The arrests occurred the same day a search warrant was executed in Mississauga where a third man was arrested. Police said the bulk of the man's business took place in Oakville and Burlington. Police seized half an ounce of crack cocaine, worth a street value of $1,500, $6,000 in cash and a 2003 Infinity G35 sedan as offence-related property. Charged are Mississauga's Clinton Charles, 40, with possession for the purpose of trafficking, trafficking in a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance; and, Burlington's Ian Dunbar, 50, with possession of a controlled substance, and Wilfred Branier, 42 with possession of a controlled substance.
