These funds are in addition to the $12.5 million the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care provided Halton Healthcare Services in 2007 a total $52 million toward the project. "You don't spend that sort of money unless you're going to build, it's that simple," noted Mr. Flynn during his presentation to a crowd consisting of hospital physicians, staff, patients and media in the cafeteria at OTMH. "This says very emphatically that the new hospital is being built and that it is being built very soon. I can't tell you how happy I am to announce that." Planning and design work for the New Oakville Hospital is 100% funded by the provincial government and does not impact the local share plan. HHS has asked the Town of Oakville to contribute $200 million to the estimated $530 million local share for the New Oakville Hospital. Oakville Town Council will make a decision regarding HHS's request at its March 1, 2010 Council Meeting. The Grade One classes at West Oak Public School are currently participating in a literacy based character building education program called Who Is Nobody? TM The goal of the program is to help students discover the strengths and talents that make them a "Somebody" by participating in positive experiences that make a difference. As part of the program, Leia Martin in Mrs. Whittle's Grade 1 class decided to use her love of baking to help other kids like herself. Leia was born at OTMH and as an infant and toddler, was hospitalized a number of times overnight due to respiratory complications associated with childhood asthma. As a result of these experiences, she wanted to give back to the Maternal Child Unit. Leia sold homemade cookies around her neighbourhood to raise money for the Maternal Child Unit. Amazingly, this impromptu door-to-door effort raised $50.00. Thank you Leia for making a tangible impact on the health of our community. For more information about the Who Is Nobody?TM experience, visit www.whoisnobody.com Left to right: Leia Martin presents a $50 cheque to Trevor Nash of the Oakville Hospital Foundation. OTMH Holiday Card Sales We would like to thank those of you who purchased the OTMH Holiday Cards through the OTMH Gift Shop and at the Oakville Hospital Foundation. We would also like to acknowledge and thank all the young artists who submitted their artwork for our 1st Annual Holiday Drawing Contest as well as the participants who voted for their favourite drawing. Again, congratulations to Maddie who was selected as the winning artist. 9th Annual Frank Sabatino Memorial Tournament Benefits OTMH Palliative Care Department Special thanks to the organizers, participants and sponsors of the 2010 Frank Sabatino Memorial Tournament (FSMT). The 9th annual tournament which was held from January 15 to 17th raised $2,500 to benefit the Palliative Care unit at OTMH. (Please visit www.fsmt.ca for more information.) We would also like to thank Dan Neri, a referee at this tournament who donated his earnings to benefit OTMH. Since 2006, the FSMT has raised more than $10,000 for OTMH. We look forward to working with the organizers in 2011 which will mark the tournament's 10th anniversary. For 2010, the FSMT team respectfully recognized Alex Pace, one of the young hockey players our community lost to cancer last year. Alex showed all who came to know him how to maintain grace in the face of the most difficult of times; that kindness, selflessness and wisdom can shine through the darkest of days. Alex played hockey with many of the boys in this tournament from Oakville at the Peewee age. Alex's number on his hockey jersey was "10" and some players wore black armbands with the #10, in his memory. Thank you for the health of our community.
