U15 Thunder golden in Burlington MOVING UP: The Oakville Thunder under-15 girls' volleyball team won a recent tournament in Burlington. The club hopes to move into Tier 1 before the Ontario championships in April and the nationals in May. The Oakville Thunder under-15 girls' volleyball team's hopes of moving up into Tier 1 this season got a major boost recently. The team won a tournament in Burlington, avenging a preliminary-round loss to Georgetown by beating the Impact 25-13, 25-23 in the championship match. Courtney Brand delivered the winning ace for Oakville as the Thunder held on after the Impact narrowed a 24-19 deficit to 24-23. "This tournament was our best shot at moving up a division into Tier 2," said Oakville coach Alan Muliyil. "We can now focus on getting into Tier 1 before the Ontario championships in April and the nationals in May. All credit to the team; they took the opportunity and made it happen." After opening the tournament with a 2523, 25-23 loss to Georgetown, the Thunder rebounded to win three straight games and reach the final. Oakville downed Ms. Pakmen 25-20, 25-16; blitzed the Collingwood Cubs 25-9, 25-13; and defeated the Cambridge Hawks 25-17, 25-12. Members of the team are Anastasiya Tarnouskaya, Autumn Bailey, Tonia Nimeck, Emily Rybnerk, Jenna Black, Courtney Brand, Amy Horikawa, Samantha Wilson, Holly Micuda, Ola Murawska and Rachel Oberholster. www. com OAK wins Central Region short-course meet Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) recently won the 2010 Central Region short-course championships at the Etobicoke Olympium. The Oakville team collected 806 points to earn the top spot. Etobicoke Swim Club came in second with 721 points and Markham Aquatic Swim Club finished in third with 670 points. The top swimmer from Oakville was 14-year-old Owen Scarrow. He finished with a first-place finish in each of his four races, earning 60 points for his team's final score. Other first-place swimmers for Oakville were Rebecca Gibson, Alexandra Kalman, Kristen Olvet, Sherry Patel, Olivia Sinclair, Kristen Wharin, Jack Cavanagh, Victor Komadina, Nathan Lang, Scott Love, Dejan Pajovic, Luka Tomic and Adam Scott. Second-place swimmers from Oakville were Carly Jazbec, Emily Ramier, Abbey Saunders, Alexandar Karam, Martin Matusczak and Connor Wilkins. Oakville's third-place finishers included Hannah Burgess, Linda Wang, Jenna Wood, Cameron Byrne, Jay Lansiquot and Carter Yeudall. OAK swimmers were back in the Etobicoke Olympium water a week later for the 2010 CR Winter Team Champs competition. Oakville's first-place finishers in this event were Laura Komadina, Emma Tsang, Artem Ivakhnenko, Blaze Slavkovski and Bryanna Samuels and Nina Tomic, who both finished with two first-place awards. Second-place finishers included Milan Bowie, Rachna Dhanjal and Alexander Glista. Third-place finishers from Oakville Aquatic Club included Jocelyn Chow, Jordan Pollock and Julius Raymond.
