7 · Friday, February 19, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Police ask for vigilance Halton police are asking residents to be vigilant following a string of similar burglaries, which have targeted northeast Oakville over the last few months. Police said since October about 15 homes have been broken into with the entries taking place during daylight hours while the homeowners are away. Detective Sergeant Kevin Maher said the suspects force their way into the home by smashing open the front door and once inside primarily steal jewelry and cash. Witnesses have observed several suspicious men in the area prior to the burglaries, but subsequent descriptions have yet to give police any real idea of who they are looking for. "In some of the cases there have been people seen in the area, but there has been nothing to link them to the actual crime. It will be just `a guy walking down the sidewalk' and the descriptions are all inconsistent," said Maher. "At this point, it's really a wide open investigation. We are at the point where we are appealing to the community. The Oakville community has stepped up in the past and provided us with those leads or that call or that one tip that says, `here's this person' or `I saw a car or a licence plate or got a description.' Those are things we need, but we're not getting." Maher went on to say it is too early to state whether one person alone or a team of two or more is committing these crimes. Police said community vigilance is important as in some cases the suspects have broken into a home almost immediately after the homeowner's departure. This has led police to believe the suspects may be watching for when the homeowner leaves. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate these incidents and anyone who sees anything suspicious that might be related to them is asked to immediately call 905-878-5511. Those with related information can call 905-8254777, ext. 2204 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). If it is an emergency situation or there is a crime in progress, residents are asked to use the 911 emergency telephone system to contact police. Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll, who has helped to organize the meeting, has also voiced concerns about the power plant. "The proposed power plant is a looming crisis for all of Oakville and everyone in Oakville needs to know about its threats and get involved in the fight to stop it," he said.
