Vol. 48 No. 17 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" 40 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) YMCA aims to raise $300,000 By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF In an effort to raise strong children, strong families and a strong community -- its motto -- the YMCA of Oakville kicked off its annual Strong Kids Campaign this week. "We all need a place to be safe, we all need a place to be nurtured and Oakville YMCA provides this in the community," said Tim Clarke, Strong Kids Campaign chair. He was speaking at the YMCA during the kick-off event. The campaign is a year-long fundraising and awareness initiative that aims to collect $300,000 this year for YMCA of Oakville. Last year's fundraiser collected just over $200,000. The money helps subsidize fees for users and subsidies vary depending on individual needs. The campaign is run annually in YMCAs across Canada. "We subsidize over 20 per cent of our memberships and we're very proud of the fact that we're able to assist members of our community," Deborah Thompson, campaign manager, told The Beaver. "We don't only teach our kids to swim and how to play sports," she added. "We teach them how to be good citizens. That's really important for us. Heritage Week in Oakville got off to a good start Tuesday with an announcement made that Oakville will receive the 2009 Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award. Former mayor Harry Barrett will also receive the Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award for Lifetime Achievement for supporting Oakville's heritage community for more than 55 years. He was nominated by the Town of Oakville. The award for the Town, which will be presented to Mayor Rob Burton at Queen's Park today, recognizes outstanding and sustained efforts in municipal heritage conservation. Among the acts that may have put Oakville in the running for such an award was a massive conservation campaign the Town undertook in July that saw around 354 properties added to the Oakville Heritage Register.
