Green light for Glenorchy By Tim Foran OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Full steam ahead for Oakville Transit By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Conservation Halton's (CH) board of directors last week approved a $14-million, 20-year master plan to restore and maintain the new 1,000-acre Glenorchy Conservation Area in north Oakville. Created in 2008, 50 years after planners originally recommended it be set up, Glenorchy encompasses an area of rolling hills, forest, creeks, wetlands, and a large gorge in the Sixteen Mile Creek valley. The name Glenorchy is Scottish for "valley of tumbling waters." The plan envisions spending up to $10 million over the next dozen years to restore more than 40 per cent of the lands in the park, which straddles Highway 407, essentially between Bronte Road and Neyagawa Boulevard. Most of the other $4 million would be spent on annual maintenance costs, including hiring staff to oversee the implementation of the master plan as well as security for the park. Before CH can get started on the project, however, the master plan requires approval from the Ontario Realty Corporation (ORC), a crown corporation of the Province's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. In March, 2008, the ORC signed a 20-year agreement with CH to manage the lands as a conservation area. According to that agreement, the ORC has a year to decide on the See Sensitive page 5 ERIC RIEHL / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER YOU GOTTA TRY: Marisa Fish tries sledge hockey at Glen Abbey Arena. This year's event, sponsored by Genworth Financial Canada, offered more than 100 free recreational activities to explore including preschool and library programs, sport demonstrations and fitness classes, even Wii Olympic winter video gaming. Also new this year was free skating at all arenas and free swimming at all indoor pools courtesy of Tim Hortons. For more photos, see page 3. Oakville has broken ground on a $45-million transit facility paid for by equal contributions from the federal, provincial and municipal governments. As a steam shovel prepared the area of 430 Wyecroft Rd. last week for the start of the facility's construction, Mayor Rob Burton, Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn and Oakville MP Terence Young gathered aboard an Oakville Transit bus parked at the site to celebrate the official start of the project. "This project is no less than the future of transit in Oakville," said Burton. "Without this new Oakville Transit depot, we would not be able to make the shift that council has decided we must make, to a grid system of bus service instead of the old radial system in and out of the GO stations. That's a big increase in service and convenience for our residents and a big advance in terms of making mobility more available to all our residents on a much larger scale than before." Young said investing in infrastructure is an important part of the federal government's Economic Action Plan, which was created to ensure Canada emerges strong from this period of economic recovery. The Oakville Transit Facility, he said, is See Upgrading page 7 save $ Folding T readmill Quiet 1.5-chp motor. 10 programs. 18 x 50: tread belt. #84-0121-2. Reg. 1099.99.
