(Oakville Hydro) is a local electricity distribution company in Ontario and is responsible for electrical power delivery to homes and businesses in the Town of Oakville. Oakville Hydro is proposing to build a new transformer station to increase the supply of electricity to the Oakville Hydro service territory. The proposed station will step-down electricity from Hydro One's 230kV high voltage transmission system to lower voltages, so that it can be distributed through Oakville Hydro's electrical system to consumers. The new station is required by spring 2011 to maintain reliable supply and anticipated growth to the Oakville Hydro service area. The project study area encompasses the Town of Oakville and Town of Milton, north of the 407 and south of Lower Base Line Road, where existing 230kV transmission corridors are present for potential connection. Oakville Hydro has proposed a site off of 6th Line Road (see map). The project is being undertaken in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Minor Transmission Facilities (Class EA) process approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. fO It is the goal of Oakville Hydro to resolve all comments submitted. Patrick Garel and Jeff Mocha (please see contact info below) will be available throughout the 30 day review period for information to aide in achieving this goal. In the event stakeholder comments or questions are not resolved by Oakville Hydro within the 30-day period, the stakeholder can submit a written request to the Minister of the Environment to "bump-up" the project to an individual environmental assessment in accordance with Part II of the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. "Bumpup" requests must be received by the Honourable John Gerretsen, Minister of the Environment at 135 St. Clair Avenue West Toronto, ON M4V 1P5 in writing, no later than 5:00pm on April 5, 2010. A copy of the request must also be sent to IBI Group at the address noted below. Information will be collected and used in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, solely for the purposes of assisting Oakville Hydro in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. This material will be maintained on file for use during the study and may be included in the project documentation. With the exception of personal information, all comments will become part of the Public Record. Students can turn green ideas into green cash Students who have had a great green idea have a chance to turn those plans into dollars by entering Halton Region's Regional Chair's Environmental Awards competition. The awards are designed to both support Halton's youth who have achieved environmental excellence in their schools and community and inspire others to take the same action. The awards are split into two categories: · The Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Scholarship support Halton youth who have chosen to pursue post secondary studies that relate to the environment. Award winners in this category will receive a $1000 scholarship. · The Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Excellence recognize an appreciation for the environment in our youth and raise awareness of local environmental initiatives, giving Halton elementary and secondary students the opportunity to win $500 for their school. The submission deadline for both categories is Mar. 12, 2010. "We're all responsible for preserving the environment and these awards are a great way to encourage innovative thinking from our young leaders," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. Award winners will be recognized at the Regional Chair's Breakfast on the Environment, scheduled to be held at the Burlington Convention Centre on April 20, 2010. Craig Kielburger, founder and chair of Free the Children, will be the keynote speaker at the event, which will be attended by local students and the business community. The awards are sponsored by Bell Canada and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. Organizations and individuals can show their support for the environmental efforts of Halton's youth by sponsoring an award, a scholarship or by purchasing a table at the breakfast.
