Musician Arts awards applications due has local concerts WOOD N' FLOOR We Install all Kinds of Floors "Refinish Your Wood Floor Like New" 27 · Friday, February 5, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Continued from page 24 " T h e r e were lots of auditions I didn't get, but I think that it happened for a reason and went this way instead. My life has been shaped by Mercer those events and it has all worked out very well." Currently based in Toronto, Mercer has given guest masterclasses at the University of Toronto and at Wilfrid Laurier University. Besides rehearsals and concerts, Mercer works hard to keep in prime musical shape, practicing about four to five hours a day. Part of her daily musical diet is Bach. "I play Bach every day, if I can," said Mercer, who places Bach, Beethoven and Shostakovich above all others. "It is like meditation to play Bach suites on the cello." Mercer has many Toronto performances coming up this month, such as with the Canadian Opera Company in their latest production of Carmen at the Four Seasons Centre and with the Art of Time Ensemble at the Harbourfront Centre. Mercer is also using her musical talents to give back. She, along with musicians Jin-Shan Dai and Vanessa Lee, is presenting an afternoon concert of duos and trios to raise funds for Haiti on March 21 at 2 p.m. at First Unitarian Church, 170 Dundurn St. S. in Hamilton.
