From Rotarians in the Dominican, Warrington learned of the outpouring of Dominican help to Haiti. From Moca and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, citizens and corporations were donating medical, shelter and food supplies in several containers. The supplies were taken by a convoy of trucks driven by volunteers and delivered directly to sites set up by the Haitian government just outside of Port-auPrince where displaced locals were living in makeshift tents. Containers of Hope for Haiti was born, according to Warrington. Over the next several months, Oakville residents can contribute much-needed supplies to earthquake victims in an ongoing, direct, trusted and reliable way through Containers of Hope for Haiti. Locally, business owner Victor Brewda, of Royalton International, has donated his large warehouse and loading Judy Warrington dock at 2880 Portland Dr. as the storage area where the goods can be packed and loaded onto containers bound for the Dominican Republic. The first shipment is scheduled to leave Feb. 12. Warrington will be travelling to Puerto Plata and, along with Rotary members in the Dominican, will meet the container at the port. It will then be delivered into Haiti. Already word of the effort is spreading in town. Two Rotary clubs in Oakville and a few local residents have already responded via cash donations to fund container and shipping costs. Donations of medical supplies, tents, school backpacks, water and other items have already been received from local businesses. Atlas Van Lines, via KMG Royal Moving & Storage, has offered the services of professional container packers, according to Warrington. Knox Presbyterian Church at Lakeshore Road and Kerr Street, Evangel Pentecostal Church at Rebecca Street and Third Line, and the Howie residence at 313 Beechfield Rd. have agreed to be convenient drop-off sites for donations. Local realtor Hilary Schantz has created a Haiti Relief tab on her website www.theoakvillebuzz.com where further information, ongoing needs and updates about Containers of Hope will be posted. Warrington said she'll even post photos and information of the delivery when it happens on the website. Among the shelter supplies needed in Haiti are: tents, tarps, sleeping bags, ground cover or thin mattress pads, blankets, towels, water purification tablets, buckets, pots and spoons. First aid supplies needed include sterile gloves, gauze, bandages, tape, cotton balls, swabs, slings, elastic bandage and antiseptics (Betadine type or Chorohexidine soap type). Personal items required include Purell, soap, diapers, sanitary napkins, toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, Afro hair combs and hairbrushes. Food required includes canned beans, canned meat, canned tuna and sardines, crackers, cereal bars, milk tetrapacks, fruit juice tetrapacks and nonperishable food in general. New or gently-used items will be accepted, however, residents are urged not to donate clothing because it will not be allowed entrance by Dominican Port authorities. Donation items for the con- tainer will be received at the drop-off sites until Thursday, Feb. 11 and the container will be shipped Feb. 12.
