Volunteers have Olympic spirit By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF They couldn't get the tickets, but a group of Oakville youths are heading out on a 2010 Olympic Winter games road trip regardless. Oakville brothers Adam, 24, Michael, 23, and Tyler Willhoeft 17, and friends Alyce Coutts, 17, Roni Kumra, 19, and Liz Brown, 21 are preparing to embark on a fantastic journey that will see the circle of friends travel the more than 4,000 kilometres from Oakville to Vancouver where they have arranged to serve as volunteers. Brown and Adam, who spoke for the group, said the idea came in the months leading up to the Olympics as more and more the friends found themselves consumed with a desire to participate in the historic event. "It's going to be the experience of a lifetime for us," said Brown. "We will always remember this. We are so proud to have the Olympics hosted in our country, a place we can go and watch it, that's why we are so driven to go." Making the volunteer arrangements online, Adam said the group will be traveling to Whistler Creekside where they will perform a number of tasks during the alpine events. Ineffective, costly, dangerous. These were just a few of the ways Oakville's business leaders characterized a proposed bylaw the Town is hoping to use to control major emissions of the pollutant known as fine particulate matter (PM). The Town invited around "I just feel they are focusing 50 business oper- on the wrong area. The bylaw, listed as 2009-197, would require facilities that emit fine PM to undergo a rigorous approval process and be subject to reporting requirements on an ongoing basis. The emitter would be required to provide the Town with the average worst-case rates of emissions during operations and the Town would implement regulatory controls, if needed, and monitor emissions.
