Vol. 53 No. 7 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" 40 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Family safe and helping Haitian earthquake victims By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Aftershocks felt by Oakville students By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville chiropractor Cheryl van der Mark and her family are alive in the wake of Tuesday's massive earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter Scale and was centered just southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. And they are "Teagan (van der working hard to Mark) sent us an etreat the sick mail. It was one line. It and injured. "Neither said, 'We're all okay, Cheryl nor mom's helping out'." Laurens (her husband) has Dr. Julie Maduri, laid their head of North Ridge down on a pilFamily Chiropractic low since," said Marilyn Waterman, one of three administrators for Missouri-based Mission of Hope Haiti. Cheryl is the director of northeast Oakville's North Ridge Family Chiropractic. She has been in Haiti for the last 18 months with Mission of Hope Haiti. She is there with her husband, Laurens, an OPP officer, their three children -- Teagan, 14, Grayden, 10 and Brigley, 7. Haitian twins, Loudemina and Loudiana, believed to be about six years old, are also living with the family and are in the process of being THE VAN DER MARK CREW: Oakville chiropractor Cheryl van der Mark (right) and her family, husband Laurens, and children (front row, l-r) Teagan, Grayden and Brigley, as pictured a few years ago, escaped injury during the earthquake in Haiti. The van der Marks have been working at the Mission of Hope in Haiti for the past 18 months. adopted by the van der Marks. The family, as well as the Rumford family of Burlington -- Grant, a Halton paramedic and his wife, Sandy -- in addition to the entire North American contingent of Mission of Hope Haiti missionaries and their children are reported to be safe and uninjured outside of cuts and bruises, according to Waterman. "They're doing fine and they're all alive, that's about all we know," said Dr. Julie Maduri, a chiropractor who is running North Ridge Family Chiropractic in Cheryl's absence. Maduri, of Markham, has also made two mission trips herself to Haiti, one last May and last October. It is impossible to be unaffected by the images that are coming from the rubble that was once Port-auPrince, Haiti. A father cries as he carries his dead young daughter in his arms, civilians desperately use their bare hands to move large pieces of concrete in rescue efforts, and the now hundreds of thousands of homeless sleep in the streets. A massive, 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the small island nation at approximately 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The quake's centre was reportedly 25 kilometres from nation's capital, Port-au-Prince. The latest reports from Haiti's Red Cross estimate a death toll close to 50,000, with roughly three million more hurt or homeless. The news is tragic, even more so to those with a connection to the Caribbean nation. Among those with a relationship to Haiti is the student body at Mother Teresa Catholic School. Mother Teresa has been sponsoring the construction of schools in that country for the past four years.
