Heffernan said attacks like Brown's serve as a wake-up call to patients before it's too late . "One in three people never make it to the hospital alive," said Heffernan however, quoting statistics on heart attacks. Other stats say an equal number of men and women die of heart disease annually. And if you're a woman, you are 25 times more likely to die with heart disease than breast cancer," said Heffernan. Further, 30 per cent of people who have heart attacks don't have any of the risk factors. It's not all doom and gloom however, says Heffernan. Oakville's participation in the regional angioplasty program -- even before Mississauga -- translated to chances being better for survival and recovery if you had a heart attack at Hopedale Mall rather than Square One. And OTMH is the only community hospital (in Canada Eric Brown that is not otherwise a regional angioplasty or bypass centre), to boast having an intra-aortic balloon pump machine -- a lifesaving piece of equipment purchased by the local hospital through fundraising. On the statistics side, the number of heart attacks has decreased 25 per cent over the last decade, 50 per cent over the last 20 years and 70 per cent compared to the 1950s. Yet, heart disease is still the number one killer in Canada, said Heffernan. And while a $60 million capital campaign is underway by the Oakville Hospital Foundation to purchase equipment for the new Oakville hospital, the Foundation is also raising funds for equipment for the current hospital. Much of the equipment will have shelf life and will be moved to the new hospital. Doctors and program leaders across all departments submit a wish list and plead their case in bids to secure their equipment needs -- competing against one another. Mike Bartlett, Oakville Hospital Foundation vice-president, said it's sad, but usually there is enough only to meet the A lists of each department. As February focuses on matters of the heart, so too will Heffernan as his Feb. 10 lecture will include displays open from 6:30 to 7 p.m. with his presentation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to attend, can register at healthpromotion@haltonhealthcare.on.ca or 905-878-2383, ext. 6147.
