Police said Securit employees had been examining a damaged truck, which belonged to the affiliated company Shred-it, when the device was found lodged in the truck's mobile shredding unit. The employees immediately called emergency services, with members of the Oakville Fire Department arriving on the scene first. "They said they'd seen what appeared to be a grenade in the shredder and they didn't know what to do," said Platoon Chief Gerry Lieferink. "We evacuated the area and requested the bomb squad." The Halton Regional Police Service Explosive Disposal Unit arrived on the scene at around 2 p.m. and determined the device was not a threat. Halton Police Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Brian Carr noted the object is a pyrotechnic device, which is used by police forces or members of the military to cause a distraction during training exercises. "It was capable of either making a loud noise as a distraction or it may possibly be a smoke canister. We haven't determined that just yet," said Carr. "It was not an explosive device." Halton police are currently attempting to determine exactly where the device came from noting it was probably picked up when the Shred-it truck was completing its rounds in London back in November. The employees in the truck, which provides on-site document shredding services to numerous businesses, had been dumping papers into the truck's shredder when the shredder was damaged by something it was trying to process. In a strange turn of events that police cannot explain, the truck caught fire before it could return to Oakville. This resulted in extensive repair work. Securit did not receive the truck back until after the holidays. The device was found when employees attempted to determine what had damaged the truck's shredder.
