Baby born on Jan. 1 By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 11 · Wednesday, January 6, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Many aim to start anew on Jan. 1, but a tiny Brampton girl did just that. Baby Choudhary -- who will be named upon a visit to her family's temple according to her family's religious customs -- was Oakville's New Year's baby. Baby Choudhary was born just minutes after 2 p.m., keeping Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) waiting more than 12 hours for the first birth of 2010. "I was due on Jan. 1, so she was right on time," said her mom, Balvinder. Baby Choudhary is the second daughter to Balvinder and her husband, Harpal, both of whom hail from India. Both of the Brampton couple's girls were born at OTMH -- Baby Choudhary's older sister Pavleen was born there on March 9, 2005. The Choudhary family lived in Oakville for a year after coming to Canada from their native India before moving to Brampton, said Balvinder. After Pavleen's birth, Balvinder continued with both her family doctor and gynecologist in Oakville despite the family's move to Brampton. Expecting her baby on Jan. 1 was not only an exciting start to the new year, but also a potential tricky drive to the hospital should the weather have turned wintry. But all rolled along smoothly for Baby Choudhary and her family. "I was watching the weather, but it was Jan. 1 and the weather was good," said NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER NEW YEAR CELEBRATION: Oakville's 2010 New Year's baby, Baby Choudhary, with proud dad, Harpal Choudhary, and mom, Balvinder Choudhary. Balvinder. Baby Choudhary was born less than two hours after serving her mom notice of her impending arrival with labour pains. She weighed in at just over six pounds at birth. Baby Choudhary will be named at a ceremony to take place at her family's temple where the Holy Book will be read, family members consulted and a name chosen. No date has yet been set, said her mom. While Baby Choudhary may be waiting on an official name, she has not been waiting for lots of love, attention and hugs, which are in great supply -- not only from her proud parents, but particularly from her older sister. "Pavleen is doing well. She's excited. She tries to cuddle the baby all the time, but we have to care for the baby, too," said Balvinder, whose husband operates a Brampton gas station. After nine months of pregnancy and a birth on New Year's Day, the stay-at-home mom from Brampton is grateful for the extra help and attention for her new family addition. While having the New Year's baby was exciting, it's tough to overshadow the excitement of a baby's birth on any day, according to her mom. "It's very exciting. There's a new member in the family," said Balvinder whose new arrival was treated to a New Year's teddy bear and the centre stage spotlight upon her Jan. 1 arrival in the world.
