Vol. 52 No. 156 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" Fun on the ice Woman pulled from burning apartment By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A 57-year-old Oakville woman is in critical, but stable condition in the hospital after being rescued from a fire, which ravaged her Allan Street apartment on Sunday night. Police said the incident began at around 7 p.m. when a resident of the eight-storey apartment complex, located at 150 Allan St., noticed smoke coming from a neighbouring apartment unit on the second floor. The resident called the building superintendent, who attempted to enter the apartment, but was driven back by the flames inside. Members of the Oakville Fire Department arrived on the scene moments later and were able to extinguish the fire in a matter of minutes. "It was contained to the apartment. There was some smoke in the hallway when our guys got there, but on entry the fire was pretty well out. It was contained to the kitchen area, but there was heavy smoke damage," said Platoon Chief Dan Stacey. "The origin of the fire was the kitchen, but the exact cause is undetermined at this point." Oakville firefighters also rescued the woman from the apartment. She was then taken to awaiting EMS units for immediate care.
