Galleries director named Matthew Hyland has been named director of Oakville Galleries, effective immediately. The board of directors of Oakville Galleries said Hyland was the unanimous choice for director of Oakville Galleries. "After almost a year of serving as the interim director, our board is excited to announce that Matthew Hyland has been named our new director. We look forward to continuing to build on our many recent accomplishments through Matthew's leadership," stated Tom Dutton, president of Oakville Galleries' board of directors. "His superior organizational planning and human resource capabilities along with his enthusiasm for local and national art scenes will be incredible assets in his new position. These are important and exciting times for Oakville Galleries and Matthew will be a strong leader, guiding us towards a very bright future for the organization." Educated in women's studies and cultural studies at York University and the University of Victoria, respectively, Hyland has been with Oakville Galleries since 2006. Prior to joining the staff at the Galleries, Hyland held positions at the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre and the City of Toronto. While at the Galleries, he has curated such exhibitions as Mnemonic Devices and Deirdre Logue: Beyond Her Usual Limits. Arts Briefs renovation campaign. Jazz at the Museum 2010 kicks off on Sunday, Jan. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. with music from Drew Jurecka on violin and Jesse Barksdale, guitar. This pair of musicians, who count Django Reinhard, Dizzie Gillespie and Louis Armstrong among their influences, are members of the Hot Jazz String Quartet. On Sunday, Feb. 14, the Vickie Van Dyke Trio takes the stage for Valentine's Day. Van Dyke's smooth jazz vocals have earned her a dedicated following. The Sultans of String, a five piece band that leaves no musical genre untouched, performs on Sunday, March 14. The band's repertoire includes everything from gypsy jazz to rumba to flamenco. Award-winning jazz/blues piano player, Tyler Yarema is joined by upright bass player Terry Wilkins on Sunday, April 11, and on Mother's Day, Sunday May 9, The Three Guitars -- George Grosman, Tony Quarrington, and David Dunlap -- return to the Museum to wrap up the spring series.
