Worker killed on QEW A construction worker was killed when a slab of concrete fell on him at a work site on Tuesday. The man was working a hand-operated stone cutter on a portion of the old Bronte Road bridge, which is being demolished to make way for a new bridge. Ontario Provincial Police say that section gave way, falling about three metres, and the worker was crushed by a concrete slab. The accident occurred in a construction zone on Bronte Road just north of the Queen Elizabeth Way at about 2:30 p.m Tuesday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. "It's very unfortunate," said OPP Constable Graham Williamson. Williamson said the concrete slab measured about two metres by three metres and was about one metre thick. "It was a substantial piece of concrete," he said. Other workers used a backhoe to lift the concrete slab off their colleague. The bridge is being replaced as part of an $89-million contract awarded in 2007 to Toronto-based Aecon Group Inc. The project involves the construction of a fourth lane in both the eastbound and westbound directions between Burloak Drive and Third Line to serve as high-occupancy vehicle lanes. Aecon is also rehabilitating the existing QEW bridge at Bronte Road. Work is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
