New YMCA CEO moving forward 3 · Wednesday, December 9, 2009 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Continued from page 1 once I got into the community and started to interact with the staff, members and volunteers, I started to think about how it felt like a fit and I was enjoying my time here and saw a lot of opportunities for the YMCA," he said. "It was an unexpected shift in my career." McKenzie was previously general manager of support services with YMCA Ontario, where he provided management support to the province's 24 YMCA associations and coordinated provincial initiatives. Prior to that he served YMCA Ontario as manager of training and programs. Before joining the YMCA family, he worked with Procter & Gamble in brand management. McKenzie holds an honours bachelor of business administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and a master of business administration from Queen's University. He has an extensive background in outdoor education, serving as director of camping and outdoor education for the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka's Camp Kitchikewana. In addition, he has worked with the Canadian Coast Guard (Search and Rescue), Outward Bound Zimbabwe, the Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School, Youth Challenge International (Costa Rica and Guyana) and the National Outdoor Leadership School. McKenzie currently calls Barrie home, but he is now looking to relocate permanently to Oakville, as he officially assumes his new role next week on Dec. 15. He said his first task is developing a detailed, short-term plan. "I'm currently putting together a 100-day plan that is going to guide my direction," he said. McKenzie replaces Oakville businessman and former Toronto Argonaut Dan Ferrone. The YMCA of Oakville made headlines last summer when Ferrone was let go after two months as its "Something that I've been really impressed with is the commitment of the staff and volunteers to move forward." No definitive reason has yet been given for his dismissal. The situation caused a stir among YMCA staff and members, some of whom held protests, demanding Ferrone be reinstated. McKenzie said that he is only interested in looking forward when asked about the previous situation. "Something that I've been really impressed with is the commitment of the staff and volunteers to move forward," he said. "We've been really focused on how we can continue to serve our community, how can we continue to deliver our mission in the best way possible and so really, my agenda has been moving the organization forward." The board of directors led the search for a new president and CEO this fall. More than 160 applications were received for the position. McKenzie's history with YMCA Ontario, and his performance as interim president and CEO made him the best candidate, according to Kristian Knibutat, board chair. "Darryl is going to be a great addition to the team," he said. "There was a good balance there with Darryl with strong leadership skills, good Y value sets and (he's) a good people person, as well. It has been a difficult situation over the last couple of months and he has done a very good job and the feedback we've had from the community and other stakeholders has all been very positive. We think he's got all of the things we're looking for in a CEO." FACTORY TILE TOUCH! Get Your Home Ready For The Holidays We can transform any space!
