Both teams meet once a week throughout the school year. Students participate in local, regional, provincial and national competitions. Guthrie said several of his students who were on the debate team have gone on to become lead debaters at various prestigious universities, such as Queen's University and New York University, across North America. He said even those who don't pursue law or join debate teams at the post-secondary level still leave the halls of White Oaks armed with many skills. "It's about learning how to think and analyze things," he said. "We're seeing benefits of two kinds. Number one, there is strength as public speakers, presenters in class, and being good prospective job applicants. Secondly, there's depth of analysis in essays and organization of ideas." Guthrie said he is proud of the legacy of the debate team at the school, which draws from a cross-section of students actively involved in other programs like drama, sports, music and academics. "I like to think that White Oaks Secondary School has one of the strongest debate teams in Ontario," Guthrie said. "The boys and girls on the team know that their credentials in debate will be very important in university applications. Universities are very interested in debate skills and it improves chances of admission." inspired The Middle School Advantage Appleby's Middle School program introduces Grade 7 and 8 students to a host of academic, social, leadership and team-building opportunities.
