Clamping down on campaign contributions Town council may soon ask the Province of Ontario for the power to prohibit developers and trade unions from making campaign contributions to any candidate of a municipal election. Ward 4 Councillor Allan Elgar put the notice of motion forward, during Monday's council meeting, calling for a change to the rules of the 1996 Municipal Elections Act with regard to who can make campaign contributions. In his motion Elgar noted campaign contributions should reflect the support of the voters who elect the candidates. He also pointed out that various reviews of election finances have given rise to public concern about just how much influence a campaign contribution gives a developer or trade union over a politician. The Government of Canada and various provincial governments have already prohibited contributions from corporations and trade unions related to their respective elections. The Province of Ontario has also enabled the City of Toronto to pass a bylaw to prohibit donations to municipal campaigns from corporations and trade unions. In light of this Elgar is calling on the Province to allow all Ontario municipalities to do the same. The motion will be discussed further during the Monday, Dec. 14 council meeting. 5 · Wednesday, December 2, 2009 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Working on making improvements Continued from page 1 zon for 2010.
