23 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 13, 2009 · www.oakvillebeaver.com Making preparations for Santa's arrival in town W hen Santa comes to town Saturday, Nov. 21, children of all ages will line the streets downtown and in Kerr Village. This year's theme is A Rock `n' Roll Christmas and for years the parade has been part of a story of giving back to our community. Sometimes, we get so caught up with the excitement of Christmas, we forget there are many in our community who go without over the holidays. The Santa Claus Parade has a long history with its toy and food drives and sale of red noses to make Oakville a better place for the less fortunate. On Parade Day, the Kinsmen Club of Oakville will collect non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army. They encourage everyone to bring at least one non-perishable food item to the parade. Cash donations will also be accepted. This year Kinsmen is partnering with Whole Foods Market Oakville, which is providing in-kind support for the food drive, and The Allan Candy Company, which is also assisting with the food drive. "Allan Candy is thrilled to be able to support the Kinsmen in their annual food drive, providing our truck for their use as well as candy canes and Big Foot candy for everyone along the Parade route," said Allan Candy president & CEO, Steve Diakowsky. Watch for a special visit from a shy, but friendly, Big Foot, assisting in food collection. Every parent would agree the joy on the face of a child on Christmas morning is what memories are made of. But what about those families that struggle to place even one gift under the tree? The Oakville Professional Fire Fighters firmly believe that every child deserves at least one special gift and so once again, a crew will be on hand to accept new, unwrapped toys from parade goers or, for the third year, toys can be dropped off at parade gold sponsor Oakville Mazda at 1291 Speers Rd., the official toy drop off location. And don't forget children over the age of 12. Both the Kinsmen Club and the firefighters will have trucks starting downtown at about 8:30 a.m. just before the official start of the parade and volunteers will accept donations. The Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood will, for the 15th year, sell red noses for charity. Dressed as clowns, this group sells their famous Falgarwood are the only on Lakeshore to Kerr Street, groups authorized to accept north on Kerr and end at donations at the parade.
