Vol. 52 No. 137 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2009 24 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) A day for remembering By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A bitter cold wind and a grey overcast sky did little to hinder Oakville's Remembrance Day ceremonies Wednesday with several hundred people journeying to the Cenotaph at George's Square to pay their respects to Canada's war dead. As the crowd gathered in the minutes before the 11th hour, bagpipes and drums could be heard in the distance. These sounds steadily grew in intensity until a parade of veterans, followed by columns of present day soldiers, Halton Regional Police, OPP, RCMP, Knights of Columbus, scouts, guides, cadets and local dignitaries, made its way to the square. At the Cenotaph itself, four soldiers from the Lorne Scots Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment stood as though frozen with faces and rifles solemnly turned downward in remembrance. With the commencing of the ceremony, those who could stand, did so for the singing of the national anthem and for two minutes of silence during which a bugler played The Last Post. The St. Andrew's Children's Choir sang In Flanders Fields for those present with a wreath laying ceremony taking place shortly thereafter.
