Vol. 52 No. 132 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2009 60 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Hospital may swap land for $200-M tax support By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Hockey player in hospital after hit Kitchener Rangers defenceman Ben Fanelli, of Oakville, remains in intensive care in a Hamilton hospital, with a fractured skull and face and a laceration above his eye. He was airlifted to the hospital after going headfirst into the boards during Friday's Ontario Hockey League game. Fanelli, 16, Ben Fanelli is listed in serious, but stable condition. The Rangers announced Sunday afternoon that there was no change in his condition. "The Fanelli family and the Rangers organization again thank the many people who have expressed their concern and wishes for Ben's recovery," Rangers chief operating officer Steve Bienkowski said in a media release posted to the team website. "Your continued respect for the family's privacy as they focus on supporting Ben is appreciated." Fanelli was checked into the end boards by Erie's Michael Liambas and his head went hard into the glass, sending his helmet up in the air. Halton Healthcare Services has asked the Town of Oakville for $200 million for the new Oakville Hospital. The Town is receptive to the idea and the money will likely be raised through a special hospital tax, according to Mayor Rob Burton, but there are strings attached. In exchange for the Town's support of the request, which will be discussed and voted on at a council meeting Dec. 14, Burton says the Town wants the land occupied by Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, which will be closed when the new hospital opens, and the old Oakville Trafalgar High School. "Council will be requiring the hospital to turn over to the Town (at no charge) the existing hospital site and the old Oakville Trafalgar High School site in order to obtain this backing," said Burton. An initial payment of the Town's $200-million share would not be required until substantial completion of the construction in late 2014 and the balance of the payment could be financed over 30 years, according to John Oliver, president and CEO of HHS. Reassuring Kiara is her grandfather, Michael Ng. Good news, bad news at H1N1 clinics Lineups shorter, but vaccine supply running low By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF See Mayor page 4 Halton Region H1N1 vaccination clinics are only immunizing highrisk individuals this week, as the vaccine supply is diminishing and could run out by the weekend, according to Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region's medical officer of health. There may not be any vaccine available next week, he said. "For this week, we should have vaccine for most of the week, but undoubtedly next week, we will not have vaccine for the clinics," Nosal said on Monday morning. "Unfortunately there is not enough vaccine to immunize the general public. I certainly empathize with the parents, because if you had to pick the next group that should be immunized, it is the younger school children."
