27 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 16, 2009 Float deadline for Santa parade T he Oakville Santa Claus Parade is welcoming all community groups, schools and businesses who wish to enter a float in this year's parade taking place on Saturday, Nov. 21. Every year, Oakville residents look forward to the parade and line up to watch colourful floats, marching bands and the big arrival of Santa with his eight tiny reindeer. The parade signals the start of the Christmas season. The Oakville Santa Claus Parade has been delighting people for 61 years and it's your turn to be part of all the holiday cheer by entering a float. This year's parade theme is A Rock'n' Roll Christmas. Creativity and originality are key when designing your float. There are already a few entries featuring Elvis and the 1950s, so please put on your Santa hats and see what other original, rockin' Christmas ideas come to mind. The Oakville Santa Claus Parade website has a ideas to inspire you. The Santa Claus Parade committee urges all groups to get involved in the excitement. Whether you are a service club, charity or community organization, sporting group or local business, don't miss out on this important tradition. As always, the parade is looking for local schools to participate in the school challenge. Think you've got what it takes to build a float? Then do it. All Oakville schools are invited to get involved and compete for the title of Best School Float. Schools can also compete for the overall grand prize of $500 for the group that can top the rest. Once again this year local schools are working hard to wrestle the title from St. Ignatius of Loyola, winner of the Best School Float award last year, and they'd love some more competition. "Santa's elves are putting in extra hours at the schools to see if they can take the title from Loyola," said Denise Copping, T.A Blakelock student and the parade's official school liaison. "So I invite all schools to get in the Christmas spirit and show our town what your school is all about." Questions about the school challenge can be directed to Denise Copping at schools@oakvillesantaclausparade.ca. Don't miss out on all the fun this year; enter today. Entry forms are available online at www.oakvillesantaclausparade.ca. Those interested can also leave a message at 905815-5981. The deadline for entries is the first 50 entries received or Oct. 23, whichever comes first. There are only a few spots left, so don't wait. The Oakville Santa Claus Parade is a cherished tradition in our town. The 2009 Parade takes place Saturday, Nov. 21 beginning at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds Street, go west on Lakeshore to Kerr Street, north on Kerr and end at Stewart Street.
