Ellard is a professor of psychology at the University of Waterloo and director of its Research Laboratory for Immersive Virtual Environments. He suggests that understanding where mental space comes from and what we do with it may help us to recapture our sense of environmental stewardship before it is too late. "Key to our future existence and happiness will be a thorough understanding of how our mental connections to space influence our understanding of place," he said.
