OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 2, 2009 · 38 OWSL champs Aquinas students, White Oaks teams earn medals at cross-country meet St. Thomas Aquinas students Braden Culver and Kelly Hennessy earned medals at the season-opening Hawk-Dreams high school cross-country meet. Culver finished second in the midget boys' race, completing the four-kilometre course in 14 minutes and 10 seconds. Westlane Secondary's T.J. Kountourogiannis won the race in 14:04. Hennessy placed third in the junior girls. She turned in a time of 12:22 on the three-kilometre course. Halton rival Shannon Labelle won the event, posting a 31-second victory over Highland Secondary's Karen Thomson. Labelle's winning time was 11:45. Although Aquinas had the top individual finishers, it was White Oaks that posted the top team results, finishing second in the midget boys' division and third in junior girls. Connor Bevington led the Wildcats midget boys' team with a ninth-place finish in the field of 133 runners. He was followed closely by Andrew Harris in 13th. Rounding out the team were Johnathon Stamper in 39th and Oliver Kearns in 46th. White Oaks' Melissa Silliphant was sixth in the field of 95 in the junior girls' race. Alex Abrahams was 23rd, Melanie Emmerson was 29th and Michelle Koh was 45th to help the Wildcats edge Our Lady of Lourdes for bronze. IR golfer shoots low round of girls' season Sooin Chung of Iroquois Ridge shot the low round of the day to move into a tie for third place in the Halton high school girls' golf standings. Chung's round of 78 at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington was not only the best of the day, it was also the low round of the Halton girls' season. With her strong final round, Chung finished with a three-round total of 255, tying Christ the King's Candice Swartz for third. Nelson's Jenna Hague won the Halton title with a total of 241, beating Corpus Christi's Michaela DiMarchantonio by 13 strokes. Oakville Trafalgar golfers Alex Vickers and Christine McAllan finished 7th and 10th, respectively. William Mahood of Iroquois Ridge finished fifth in the final boys' standings. Mahood had a two-day total of 150, shooting a 74 at Dragon's Fire and a 76 at Hidden Lake. Abbey Park's Scott Banks tied for ninth with a total of 156 while Stephen Bardswick of Iroquois Ridge was 11th at 157. Notre Dame's Kris Kowalchuk shot back-to-back rounds of 72 to take the Halton title. FLAWLESS DEFENSIVELY: The Oakville minor bantam AA Rangers won all five of their games at the Kawartha Lakes Cup, outscoring their opposition 15-0. Minor bantam AA Rangers dominate in Kawartha There aren't many better ways to bolster a team's confidence than by outscoring its opposition 15-0 at a tournament. That's what the Oakville minor bantam AA Rangers managed to do at last weekend's Kawartha Lakes Cup, winning all five of their games on their way to the championship. Patrick Shea and Lukas Marek combined to earn the five consecutive shutouts. Oakville defeated the Georgetown Raiders 3-0 in the final. Doug Bertrand, Marko Jugovic and Logan Crozier scored for Oakville. The Rangers downed the Ancaster Avalanche 2-0 in the semifinal, with goals from Brandon Hughes and Bertrand. In the opening round, Oakville hammered the Toronto Royals 6-0, edged the Clarington Toros 1-0 and defeated the Whitby Wildcats 3-0. The line of Brandon Hughes, Alex Cox and Luke Hatfield combined for four goals versus Toronto. Christian Hayes had the winner against Clarington.
