Teacher cleared of historical sex charges A Mississauga teacher has been found not guilty of sex charges stemming from incidents at a Meadowvale elementary school some 30 years ago. Oakville resident Cornelis Kersten, left Brampton court a free man last Thursday (Sept. 24) after Justice Gordon Lemon acquitted him on the charges following a trial. Investigators from the Peel Regional Police Special Victims Unit arrested and charged Kersten with sex-related offences in March 2008. A man alleged the incidents occurred in 1978 at Shelter Bay Public School, where Kersten was a teacher. Kersten was charged with indecent assault on a male and gross indecency. Kersten is currently employed by the Peel District School Board as an occasional teacher. 5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 30, 2009 Two charged in church vandalism Two Hamilton men have been arrested in connection with an early August rampage that saw more than $10,000 worth of vandalism done to Trafalgar Presbyterian Church. Police said the incident took place at some point between Aug. 9 and Aug. 10, when suspects smashed a large plate glass window to enter the church, located at 354 Upper Middle Rd. Once inside the suspects smashed windows and removed sound equipment valued at more than $2,000. The suspects also sprayed mustard and ketchup, taken from the church kitchen, over the entire church. On Sept. 19, investigators located several of the items stolen from the church in a Burlington pawnshop. Further investigation led to the recovery of a small portion of the stolen property and the arrest of two men. Brandon Christensen, 23, and Jordon Miller, 22, have been charged with break and enter, theft, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and mischief over $5,000.
