OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 18, 2009 · 34 War shows, fibre fest open T he Home of Fine Broadloom Since 1952 This weekend, Oakville Galleries presents the opening of two new photography exhibitions that explore the aftermath of conflict from the First and Second World Wars. Peter MacCallum's Vimy Ridge, 20052008, on view at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens, presents the recent restoration and reopening of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial and surrounding area. Caux, an exhibition by Bertrand Carrière on view at Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square, features photographs depicting the contemporary landscape at the site of the disastrous Dieppe raid of Aug. 19, 1942. Both exhibitions will run from Sept. 19 to Nov. 22. Members of the public are invited to an opening and two artist talks: Sunday, Sept. 20 at 2:30 p.m. at Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square, followed by a reception at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens at 3:30 p.m. Arts Briefs from 16 countries, including strong representation from provinces across Canada. Fibre arts encompasses a wide variety of art forms, such as knitting, wall hangings, sculpture, quilting, installations, hooking, lace-making, knitting, weaving, embroidery, crocheting, paper-making, felting, wearable art and much more. The group consists of 19 amateur and professional musicians dedicated to keeping the sounds of big band jazz alive. It is trying to establish a home for some live jazz and are now performing on the last Tuesday of each month at Arnold's Sportsbar, 485 Morden Rd.
