The new building, which was slated to open in Sept. 2010, won't be ready until Jan. 31, 2011. Construction on the new school was supposed to start in mid-March, but did not get underway until midsummer as the building permit from the Town of Oakville was not received until the end of July, according to Giacomo Corbacio, superintendent facility management services with the Halton Catholic District School Board. "On July 28, we received the building permit from the Town of Oakville, which we were very grateful to receive," he said. "Then we started to mobilize and start with the excavation site services and that is what we are working on now." Students moved out of the threestory section of the original building into portables at the start of the second semester in January 2009. The three-story section of the building was demolished through late spring and early summer. Halton police are asking for the public's help in finding those responsible for the theft of nearly 100 bronze flower vases from gravesites in Oakville. Police said that at some point between Friday, Sept. 11 and Monday, Sept. 14, thieves visited Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery, located at 1149 Dundas St. W., and made off with around 60 bronze flower vases, which were affixed to various grave markers. Nearby Glen Oaks Cemetery, located at 3164 Ninth Line, was also subjected to a similar theft with around 30 bronze flower vases stolen from gravesites. Det. Sgt. Kevin Maher of the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau said the motivation for the crime most likely comes from the money thieves will get from selling the vases as scrap metal. "With the type of metal they were made of and the number taken and the fact that they are gone as opposed to just being knocked over leads us to the conclusion that this was for monetary gain," said Maher. "This is certainly a very unfortunate incident." While Maher noted this is the first time in his memory that thieves have targeted a cemetery, stealing scrap metal is nothing new for Oakville. In 2007, a massive bronze statue of Taras H. Shevchenko was stolen from a north Oakville park. The theft of raw materials from private homes is also not an uncommon occurrence. "We do have a lot of copper theft in and around Halton," said Maher.
