The sudden change in personal policy came as Flynn was moved in a cabinet shuffle from his previous position as parliamentary assistant to the Minister of the Environment to a new station as parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. Flynn had been under orders from Queen's Park to refrain from speaking about the power plant, as doing so could have been seen as a conflict of interest due to his position with the Ministry of the Environment. Now that he holds a new post, he is free to speak. "I don't believe this is a proper place to put a power plant. It's that simple," said Flynn. NIKKI WESLEY /OAKVILLE BEAVER FIGHTING BACK: About 800 people showed up to take part in the 29th annual Terry Fox Run in Oakville Sunday. The run was hosted at Abbey Park High School. Initial numbers indicate more people participated in the event this year, than last, however, an official tally of how much was raised won't be known for several more days. Chair Ralph Robinson was pleased with the turnout and said he still has 39 Terry Fox T-shirts for sale. For more photos, and information on buying a T-shirt, see Living. Town council's plan to call on the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to establish a two-for-one emissions reduction plan has been scrapped after residents voiced opposition to the idea at Monday's Planning and Development Council. The plan would have demanded for every pound of pollution pumped into the Oakville-Clarkson Airshed by a proposed 850-900megawatt gas-fired power plant, the OPA would see twice as many emis- Mayor Rob Burton sions reduced by other area polluters. This motion did not impress the standing-room only crowd that had packed council chambers to voice opposition. The emissions reduction motion comes as the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) examines bids from four companies hoping to get the contract to build and operate the power plant. If TransCanada is successful in its bid, the 900megawatt Oakville Generating Station will be established on the Ford-owned lands at 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. If any of the other three companies are successful, the plant will be built just across the border in Mississauga. Before delegations were heard, Mayor Rob Burton addressed the crowd, stating a new motion had been brought forward to defer discussion of the proposed emissions cuts until a power plant location was chosen, if one was chosen at all.
