OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 11, 2009 · 10 Firefighting students set to clean up On Saturday, Sept. 12 student firefighters from the Humber College Fire and Emergency Service Program will be fundraising for Habitat for Humanity Halton. They will hold a car wash between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., at Loyola High School, located in Oakville on Fourth Line, south of Upper Middle Road. The student firefighters will be fundraising for The ReNew It Program, a Canadian version of the U.S. program A Brush with Kindness. This is a renovation, maintenance and repair program which assists those living below median income levels, yet own their home. In Canada, almost 70 per cent of homeowners live below the low-income cut-off guidelines. Many of these people are seniors or people with disabilities. Letter to the editor Mayor says cleaner air is not about who gets credit I have demanded that the government remove twice as much pollution from our airshed as its power plant will put in. Monday night I am asking Council to back that demand. Today, I have seen an excerpt from an email from an anonymous person complaining that if my two-for-one pollution cuts strategy succeeds I might get credit for cleaning up the air. The person or persons behind the e-mail also says they are looking for ways to prevent my strategy from working. I want to reassure everyone that I do not seek any credit for this strategy: I did not invent it, it is a proven strategy used by the U.S. EPA in California to clean up dirty airsheds. One has to wonder at the motives of the person(s) behind the anonymous e-mail looking to find ways to keep us from making our air cleaner. If we get cleaner air and any credit is due, it will belong to the Premier, because he will have listened to Oakville. I am confident that reasonable people want to breathe cleaner air, and I see the government's promise to clean up our airshed as a breakthrough in Ontario's attitude to air pollution.
