OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 2, 2009 · 18 Spirit of Math member wins provincial championship Register now for our 2009-2010 season at our new state-of-the-art dance training complex! The 2009 Provincial Champion in the Thales math competition is eight-year-old Mississauga resident and member of Spirit of Math, Aydan Jiwani. Spirit of Math is an "after-school school" that focuses on highly motivated students. Developed in the classroom over 25 years, Spirit of Math gives students an in-depth understanding of core math concepts, focusing on problem solving, numeracy and cooperation. Under the instruction of highly trained teachers, students learn indepth number theory and critical thinking skills required to truly understand and solve math problems. They learn a different way of thinking that carries over to other subjects and in to many areas of life. The Thales competition put on by the Mathematica Contest Centre, a national not-for-profit organization that runs an annual math competition for students from grades 3 to 9, each named after a famous mathematician, saw 4,583 Grade 3 students competing this year. Though only in grade two, Aydan Jiwani is no rookie when it comes to math. He is a student in the Grade 3 program at Spirit of Math, an after school advanced math program for highly motivated students. Despite questions on the contest paper that would intimidate most adults such as, "The six faces of a dice are numbered from one to six, if you throw the dice 66 times, how many times could you expect to get an even number?" Aydan kept his cool, correctly answering 23 out of 25 questions. Aydan was well prepared for the competition as he's been going to Spirit of Math classes for one and a half hours a week for two years and has competed in several math competitions since the age of six, achieving also this year a perfect score in the Grade 4 Canadian National Math League Competition. Aydan says his favourite part of Spirit of Math is the Assignment of the Year, adding that number puzzles and properties in general are also fun. Spirit of Math Mississauga and Oakville Team includes Armaan Lalani, Aydan Jiwani, Azum Nanji, Jennah Motani from Mississauga and Connor De Koning from Oakville triumphed over 214 schools to win the Thales Competition. Grade 3 students Armaan Lalani, Azum Nanji, from Mississauga and Connor De Koning, a Grade 3 student from Oakville also placed on the honour roll for the Grade 4 Canadian National Math League Competition. "We're delighted and proud with our students' achievements," said Salima Mussaji, Campus Owner of Spirit of Math Schools in Mississauga and Oakville. "It's a commitment to hard work and a love of learning that leads our students to win top places in competition and our alumni to go on to Harvard, Oxford and even the Executive Office of the President of the United States." "We help boys and girls to be mathematics high performers. We also help them to be someone who communicates well, cooperates, is self-disciplined, hard working and able to face challenges head on."
