The schoolhouse was built in 1942 and is located at 2431 Dundas St. W. Visitors can explore the history of this one-room schoolhouse that is undergoing restoration by the Trafalgar Township Historical Society. Having been rebuilt numerous times, the Palermo Schoolhouse stands as an important symbol of Oakville's changing and past history. The Doors Open concept had its beginnings in France in 1984. From there it grew to European Heritage Days, in 11 Palermo Schoolhouse toric buildings, natural spaces and heritage gardens -- some of which are rarely accessible to the public -- open for free as part of Doors Open. Last year's inaugural Doors Open Oakville event was a success with more than 8,000 visitors contributing more that $200,000 to the local economy.
