400m specialist continuing to get faster Michael Trnkus continues to rack up personal bests. The local runner, who won three Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 400-metre medals during his time at Abbey Park High School, has shown steady improvement at provincial, national and international events this summer. Trnkus posted a time of 48.01 seconds to win gold at the junior provincial championships in June, taking nearly two-tenths of a second off the Michael Trnkus time he ran to earn senior boys' silver at the OFSAA meet two weeks earlier. He then tied the Ontario high school record at the Canadian senior championships later that month, finishing fourth overall with a time of 47.71. Trnkus' next meet was the junior nationals in Prince Edward Island, where he finished second in the 400m and earned a place on Team Canada for the junior Pan/Am championships. His time (48.61) was slower than at previous events, but less-than-stellar race conditions might have had been to blame. No other runner at junior nationals posted a personal-best time in the 400m. Trnkus also anchored Team Ontario to gold in the 4x400m relay. Trnkus recorded a new personal-best time at the junior Pan/Ams last weekend, completing the race in 47.58 seconds -- the fastest time among Canadian juniors this season -- to finish sixth. He also helped the Canadian 4x400m relay team to bronze with a time of 3:09.05, 13-hundredths of a second short of the national junior record that has stood since 1984. Trnkus, who will run for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues next season, has already made the cut for next year's junior world championships. That event will be held in Moncton, N.B. 9 L O C A T I O N S 39 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 7, 2009 WHY WHEN THE GOVERNMENT IS PAYING OVER 50% OFF THE PRICE OF YOUR NEW FURNACE & A/C $ * Cash Up to Back WAIT? Oldershaw set the Canadian age group record (13-14) in the 400-metre individual medley, eclipsing the 19-year-old mark set by Canadian Olympian Joanne Malar. Oldershaw posted a time of four minutes, 52.21 seconds to beat the previous standard of 4:52.35 set in 1990. Oldershaw won the race at the meet that features the best age group swimmers from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. Oakville Aquatic Club teammate Annie Harrison finished second in the 15-16 year old 400m IM, finishing behind Katie Caldwell of White Rock, B.C. Meanwhile, a the Tri-Nations swimming competition in London, England, Oakville's Tera Van Beilen earned a silver medal as a member of Canada's 4x100m medley relay team. Van Belien, along with Hanna Kubas of Calgary, MacKenzie Downing of Victoria and Jennifer Beckberger of Ajax, were edged out for the gold medal by another Canadian relay meet. Britain and Russia are also competing while Canada is represented by its national B team.
