Campbellville resident Gary Zemlak, who lost to Halton Conservative MPP Ted Chudleigh by less than 200 votes in the October 2007 provincial elecGary Zemlak tion, is seeking the nomination to be the Liberal Party candidate for Halton in the next federal election. Zemlak, a long-time Liberal Party member, had said the night of his close loss that he had no intentions to run again, but that he felt the riding could be won by the Liberals. "I just assumed if you lost, who wants you," joked Zemlak, reached recently on vacation in Nova Scotia. "But supporters kept saying, `Why don't you try federal (politics)?'" Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh has taken on the role of critic of the Attorney General in a shadow cabinet shakeup made recently by new Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak on Monday. "My learning curve is going to be huge," admitted Chudleigh. "I've been reaching out all day to people who may be able to help me with that. So, I'm looking forward to the opportunity." Chudleigh had previously served as the Tory critic of Economic Development and International Trade, portfolios that garnered him occasional press in the current recession and Ted Chudleigh fit with his business background. The unexpected role of critic for the Attorney General "came out of left field" as it wasn't one of the portfolios he had put forward to Hudak as possible shadow cabinet posts. "And my initial reaction was surprise -- you want me (to do) what?" Chudleigh joked. The government office of the Attorney General is generally held by those with a significant legal background due to the Minister's unique role of providing both policy advice to Cabinet and legal and constitutional advice. The Attorney General is in charge of enforcing the rule of law in Ontario and overseeing the courts system.
