13 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 29, 2009 Subaru taking more than their usual evolutionary step forward with 2010 Legacy Continued From Page 10 I'm not a fan of CVTs, finding them slow to get the belts sliding and bringing the car up to speed, especially when passing. The Lineartronic, to Subaru's credit, does away with a lot of the lag time. Because they are inherently more fuel efficient, probably only a handful of 2.5is will be ordered with the sixspeed, but I found it more responsive. That goes doubly for the 2.5GT. With all that torque and leading edge response turbo, this would be the Legacy for me. But perhaps the most interesting Legacy is the PZEV for partial zero emission vehicle ($26,395). Equipped with the CVT, it doesn't get hybrid-like fuel economy, but it's just as good a job when it comes to emissions running 90 per cent cleaner than the average car on the road. In smoggy downtown cores or during smog advisories, the air coming out of the exhaust pipe is actually cleaner than the air going in. The 3.6-litre cars are the 3.6R ($31,895) and the 3.6R Limited Package ($34,695) with standard five-speed automatic transmission with Sportshift sequential manual shift mode. Running on regular fuel, the big news here is the increase in torque from 216 lb/ft in 2009 to 247 lb/ft in the new model. Lavishly equipped, the 2.5 and 3.6 Limited Package models can also be fitted with the $2,300 Multimedia option. It is a DVD-based and voice activated navigation system with backup camera, but it also includes a voiceactivated Bluetooth hands-free phone system with streaming Bluetooth audio. The backup camera with the guide lines that arch to show the best angles to turn came in very handy when trying to position the 2.5GT on a right angle pier for a photograph. With the high trunk lids manufacturers use these days to increase luggage space, the system makes it easier to judge how close you are coming to an object, or in this case, the drink. THIS SUMMER, OWN THE ROAD AND A SUZUKI. 2009 SX4 Sedan OWN IT FOR Interiors of the 2010 Subaru Legacy are contemporary and comfortable. This is the 2.5I Limited with leather seating and wood grain time. Note the Blueconnect system on the centre stack that was developed for Subaru Canada. Also interesting is the electronic handbrake. No more tugging on levers and stomping on little pedals. Just touch a white tab to turn it on and pull to disengage. The biggest thing I noted was not so much the size, but the interior which is light years away from Legacys that have gone before with their mix of grey and charcoal colours and barebones controls. This is especially true of the Blueconnect system housed in the centre stack that was developed for Subaru Canada. Found on most models, it is voice activated in English or French. It is simple to access; you just tell it what you want. And when you are taking a call, it mutes the radio. With the new cellphone laws coming into effect in Ontario in October, this is a nice feature to have. From the above, you can see that Subaru is taking more than their usual evolutionary step forward. Going after the likes of Toyota Camry, Mazda6 and Chevrolet Malibu is a pretty daunting road to take for any competing manufacturer. And with standard AWD and known reliability, the 2010 Legacy now has the right stuff, and the right size, to make it in the mid-size sedan segment. $111 AT 0% APR * 2009 SX4 Crossover OWN IT FOR $135AT 0% APR * 2009 Grand Vitara OWN IT FOR $165AT 0% APR * BUY LOCALLY SERVICE LOCALLY SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY Phone: (905) 825-8088 www.volvoofoakville.com Hurry!
