Consoling Letters From the Chaplain

The following letter was read in the Baptist Church on Sunday last : Rev. Mr. Quinn ; Dear Sir,- I understand that the late Pte. R. C. Kerr was at one time minister of your church. It is with sincere regret that I write these few lines from the trenches to confirm the sad news which will by this time have reached you. Pte. Kerr laid down his life on the morning of March 14. He, with some others, was killed by an enemy trench mortar shell which landed in the trench just they were standing Mr. Kerr's death was instantaneous. This, I know, will be a comfort to his friends. We were able to take his body out and he and some others were laid to rest on Sunday March 17 (St. Patricks Day). A large number of officers and men were present. I read our burial service, so full of comfort ind hope. After the close three volleys were fired and the bugle sounded the Last Post. The sun was shining and the birds singing, reminding one of the joy of the resurrection. Mr. Kerr is buried in the little military cemetery of Thelus on the summit of Vimy Ridge. He is deeply regretted by all ranks. Although with us only a short time, we had learned to know his worth. When we were last out ia rest I arranged some lectures for our men, with a view to turning their thoughts to the days when war is over and we, please God, return to Canada. Mr. Kerr gave them a few talks on Citizenship, which were greatly appreciated by our men. And now he has given his life for that citizenship. He always had a high sense of duty. I know he found life in the trenches trying, but he was always cheerful and kept on. His loss will be felt. His life and example always stood for the things which are highest and best. What a glorious thing in these days is the hope of resurrection which this war has brought to us very foreibly. Will you please convey to Mr. Kerr's congregation our sincere sympathy.
