Scarcely had the excitement caused by the burglars of last week subsided, nor had the ripple in the feelings of society simmered down to a placid surface till again the [?] of the night was broken into: Saturday night last about midnight, when by a loud explosion many of our citizens were aroused from their slumbers, some made haste to appear on the streets others from their windows discharged the contents of [loaded] fire arms, and bolted doors and wondows were tried to see that no burglar had entered. Especially were the inmates of Mr. Robt. Trimble's [quiet] household disturbed and alarmed. The report at once aroused Mr. [Thos.] Hollinger (manager and salesman in Mr. Mr. Trimbles establishment) from his slumbers, and who is well known as a brave dextrous young man was at once on the scene of the exposion, as also was Mr. Trimble himself who strange to say was not wakened by the report but had been called by his wife. Thos. [?] with gun in hand well loaded stealthily approached the front of the store where he observed a dark figure with the appearance of a man standing on guard when it is said Thomas took a firm hold levelled the gun and asked "Who are you" receiving no answer, "Stand or I'll shoot" the figure moved not, and "the bravest held his breath for a time," Thos. with true soldier-like bravery approached, laid his hand upon the man and made him a prisoner. The prisoner made no resistance, had a masked face, about [?ft] 2in in height, corpulent, wore a well worn pea jacket, black hat and scuffed gray and black pants, and was soon discovered to be a man's suit well filled with straw. The prisoner is still retained by Mr. Trimble awaiting trial and further investigation. Immediately upon examination of the premises it was discovered that some mischievious disposed persons had carried out a well laid scheme for a "scare." A stone jar had been well charged with some explosive and placed under a heavy oak barrel open at one end at the rear of Mr. Trimble's store. The barrel was burst and staves broken in pieces, the report was very loud. Mr. T. thinks he has some clue to the perpetrators, and if convicted is determined to punish them. Mrs. Trimble who is very ill was very much alarmed and seriously injured by the fright. This may appear a good practical joke but it is no trifling matter, by the repetition of such farces citizens would not know when to believe a report nor become properly aroused when real danger was at hand
