9 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 1, 2009 Letter to the editor Power plant protest generates a lot of hot air It warms the cockles of my heart to see that the NIMBYs and weekend socialists are alive and well in southeast Oakville and southwest Mississauga. Perhaps the warming comes more from the hot air, which was spewing from the grounds of the Ontario Racquet Club on Southdown Road in Mississauga than from any power plant that might be constructed. Maybe those that are making the fuss should try reducing their own power usage. RONALD REA Stand fast Continued from page 6 imagine moving someone in their 80s twice? (Or three, in mom's case, if you count moving from her home to hospital, from hospital to Newmarket, then from Newmarket to a Markham home.) My siblings and I had a family meeting with CCAC. They and the hospital really tried to push my Mom north to Newmarket. I have to credit my two older sisters with learning mom's rights within the care system. We all voted to stand together and stand fast; mom would stay in hospital until a Markham bed was available. In November 2007 a bed became available at the Woodhaven, a Chartwell long-term care home in Markham. The Woodhaven has the nursing care mom needs, is across the street from Markham-Stouffville hospital, and on the other side of Woodhaven you can actually see my brother's house from mom's window. We are very happy with the Woodhaven. My mom is 89 years old and living in one of the Markham homes of choice. She receives the most visitors of anyone in the home since so much of her family lives nearby. I live the farthest away, another sister lives in Whitby, and yet another in Toronto. I can stay overnight in Markham with family for a long visit with mom. I wouldn't be able to do this if mom was in Newmarket. So stand fast. If we all follow the orders of the powers that be, the health system will continue to kick seniors out of hospital to the boonies. With an aging population, we have to keep pressure on for a more humane system of senior care. PAULINE MAYNARD
