Farmers' Market now open at Oakville Place Oakville Place Farmers' Market opens for its second season today. Featuring Ontario-grown fruit and vegetables, baked goods and other local specialties such as maple syrup and farm fresh eggs, the market will be open each Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the north parking lot of Oakville Place. It will remain open until Thanksgiving weekend. Ontario-grown asparagus, rhubarb, greenhouse tomatoes and peppers are available now. Ontario field strawberries will be ready by the second to third week of the market. The variety of Ontario grown fruit and vegetables sold by the market's 16 vendors will mushroom in the weeks ahead with much of what is grown throughout the province coming into season starting midJune. Things made, as well as grown in Ontario, are also featured at the Oakville Place Farmers' Market. Among these are preserves and baked goods ranging from traditional and old-fashioned recipes with no trans-fats to sugar-free, organic, vegan, lowcarb, wheat-free, and glutenfree choices. Grill and deli meats for picnics and backyard barbecues are readily available. There is also an array of honey products, including salad dressings, meat glazes and beeswax candles, in addition to organic soap products and flowers. Fern DeGois of The Bee & Me is the one to see for farm fresh eggs produced by her 100 hens. She encourages customers buying these to bring back their egg cartons each week. Buying Ontario-grown produce throughout the summer and fall months has blossomed into an `eco-chic' movement, as consumers look for ways to adapt a more earth-friendly lifestyle through changing some of their daily habits. Farmers' markets have become a fundamental element of the `buy local, eat local' phenomenon that has taken root. Environmentally, farmers' markets offer many advantages. Packaging is minimal, which reduces the amount of waste going to landfill sites, carbon emissions are lessened since food travels a shorter distance, and less energy is spent on warehousing food. Although the popularity of farmers' markets has grown with environmental concerns, current economic conditions have added to this as many look to support local businesses during tough economic times.
