`Angels' to benefit from walk Sunday The Angels in Action Family Fun Walk/Run will be held Sunday to help out Oakville's own little angel. Taking place at St. Vincent's Catholic School, residents are encouraged to participate in either the onekilometre walk or five-km walk/run to raise money for the Canadian Angelman Syndrome Society. "We have a real-life 'angel' in our school," says Kelly Demmings, a parent at St. Vincent school and organizer of the event. That `angel' is Callum Blackburn, a student in St. Vincent's Junior Kindergarten class. "Most of our students know Callum from having seen his smiling face in the hallways at school," says Demmings. "Prior to the event, they will have an opportunity to learn more about Callum and his condition in class, where they will watch a short video and have a chance to ask any questions they may have." Those diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome have intellectual and developmental delay, sleep disturbance, seizures, jerky movements (such as hand flapping), frequent laughter or smiling, and usually a happy demeanor (thus, why those affected are known as `angels'). They also love socializing and being a part of whatever is happening around them. Callum was diagnosed with the disease shortly after his first birthday. "Callum has made some really amazing progress at St. Vincent this year," says Heidi Blackburn, Callum's mother. "His transition to school has been an exciting milestone in his life." C.A.S.S. is usually the starting point for parents whose children are diagnosed with this condition. The society receives minimal funding, yet has the task of serving many families across Canada and helping them cope with the enormous challenges families like Callum's face. The walk/run will take place at Lawson Park on Morrison Road, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and the walk/run beginning at 10 a.m. Registrations costs are $10 for children, $25 for adults, and $60 for families. Cheques should be payable to the Canadian Angelman Syndrome Society. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $20. If you would like to participate in the walk/run or become a sponsor for this event, please contact Kelly Demmings at 905-339-0011 or kdemmings@sympatico.ca.
