OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 10, 2009 · 26 NOTICE OF SECOND COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE Environmental Screening and Environmental Review Avon Energy Centre Inspired Buzz routs division leaders The Oakville Buzz paid tribute to Brian Kruse before its Ontario Lacrosse Association game Friday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre (story, page 25), then honoured the team's late president with a convincing win over the division-leading Welland Warlords. Kruse lost his battle with cancer last week at the age of 51. In his time as president of the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association, the organization's registration quadrupled, laying the foundation for a junior B Buzz team that has 18 graduates of the program on its roster. Spencer Gallant scored just 18 seconds into Friday's game, setting the tone for an 8-2 victory. Leading 2-1, the Buzz opened up a threegoal lead with goals by Braden Gallant and Mark Runciman 11 seconds apart in the opening minute of the second period. Two goals each by Mark White and Spencer Gallant would extend Oakville's lead to 8-1 before Welland finally managed to get a second goal past Cam Watts five minutes into the third. The Buzz followed that up with a 12-9 victory Sunday, breaking a 7-7 tie with goals 14 seconds apart by Dylan Gilbert and Mike Dawson. Dawson would finish the game with four goals and an assist. Gilbert and Connor Gamble each scored twice while Eric Crepinsek, White, Braden Gallant and Brad Galante each had one. Davide Diruscio earned the win in net. The wins improved the Buzz to 10-5 on the season and created a logjam for second in the South West Division. Welland (10-5-1) leads the way, while Oakville, Spartan and Six Nations all sit one point back. Oakville hosts Niagara Friday at Glen Abbey at 8 p.m. The Buzz follows that with games in Elora Saturday and in St. Catharines against Spartan on Sunday. The Ontario Power Authority ("OPA") issued a Request for Proposals ("RFP") that seeks to procure a combined-cycle gas-fired electricity generation facility of up to approximately 850 MW of capacity to connect to specified electrical circuits on the IESO-Controlled Grid in the Southwest Greater Toronto Area ("Southwest GTA"). In response to the OPA RFP, Invenergy Canada Development Partnership ("Invenergy") is proposing to construct, own and operate a nominally rated 850 megawatt natural gas-fired power generation facility on an undeveloped site at 445 Hazelhurst Road in Mississauga, Ontario to provide power to the Ontario electricity grid. The facility, named the Avon Energy Centre, would use proven and efficient advanced combustion turbine technology to generate power to be supplied for the immediate needs of the Southwest GTA. Invenergy is nearing completion of a study to consider the environmental effects of the development and operation of the proposed facility. The study will meet the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act of Ontario and the associated Environmental Screening Process (Category B) as specified in Ontario Regulation 116/01, the Electricity Projects Regulation. Invenergy is completing the more detailed Environmental Review Stage of this process. Invenergy is committed to ongoing consultation with the public and stakeholder groups in the development of the proposed project. The public is invited to a second community open house to review and provide feedback on the preliminary results of the environmental assessment of the project. Please join us at Otello's Banquet and Conference Centre, 2273 Royal Windsor Drive, Oakville, Ontario, on Tuesday June 23rd, 2009 between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., to learn about and discuss the proposed Avon Energy Centre and environmental findings in greater detail. "We look at organizations like Whitby, who in box lacrosse is a powerhouse, and their house league is very strong and feeds into their rep system. That's what Brian's created. We've got a great pipeline of lacrosse athletes from which to choose from." Kruse, who worked as the general manager of a pharmaceutical company, kept the severity of his illness to himself. He remained involved with the OMLA and the Buzz up until a couple weeks before his death. "That passion and that drive was still there," Tymkiv says. "He always had this knack of how to talk to people. Even in a serious situation, he always did it in a respectful manner. "As you go through life, when you see someone like that, you know your life has been made better by just being around someone like that." Kruse was laid to rest Monday at Glen Oaks Memorial Gardens. He leaves behind his wife MaryAnn, daughter Laura, and sons Alex and Scott.
