The legendary Canadian author and award-winning writer, Wayne Johnston, will be sharing his insights about the writing life and reading excerpts from his latest books. Author of The Colony of Unrequited Dreams and the Custodian of Paradise, Johnston's books have spent extended periods of time on bestseller lists in Canada. The Colony of Unrequited Dreams was identified by the Globe and Mail newspaper as one of the 100 most important Canadian books ever produced (including both fiction and non-fiction). Born and raised in Goulds, Newfoundland and following a brief stint in pre-med, Johnston obtained a bachelor of arts in English from Memorial University. He worked as a reporter for the St. John's Daily News before deciding to devote himself full time to writing. Since 2004, Johnston has held a distinguished chair in creative writing at Hollins University in Virginia -- one of the top ranked schools in the United States for graduate studies in creative writing. He commutes back and forth to Toronto, where he feedback from readers but notes on his website, "It won't change the way I write my books and my answers may not change the way you read them, but at least we'll have closed that gap between writer and reader," he said. This won't be the first time that Johnston has presented in Oakville, but his past experience only serves to create more passion for audience interaction. "I always mix my readings with anecdotes about other presentations that I've given -- I seem to be a lightning rod for the bizarre and unusual," he said.
