Vol. 52 No. 60 Victoria Day Brand new Canadian car-hopping spree ends with arrests of three teens Halton police have arrested three Oakville teens believed responsible for a car-hopping spree that saw thefts from at least 12 parked vehicles in the early morning hours of Victoria Day. The trio's downfall occurred around 5:30 a.m. when an Acton Crescent resident responded to his car alarm and called police after realizing his car had been burglarized. Police responded to the area and found three young males, between 15-17 years old. "They had a number of items with them, so they were arrested for possession of stolen property at that time," said Detective Gerry Kelly, Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau. "Some of the stolen items that were recovered included GPS units from cars, two Nintendo Game systems, iPods, a couple of Bluetooth phone devices, digital cameras and a number of other items we haven't been able to match up to an owner yet." Kelly said car-hopping is popular among young thieves at the moment and essentially involves a person checking every car on a street until an unlocked door is found. On Sunday, May 10 at 4:30 p.m. the Oakville Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at a closed child day care centre on Shepherd Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found no fire, but an investigation revealed someone had forced open a window and pulled the fire alarm inside. Nothing was stolen from the day care centre. Shortly afterwards at 5:15 p.m., police and fire personnel responded to a fire call at a Subway restaurant, located at North Service Road near Third Line. Police learned suspects set fire to the paper in the paper towel dispenser in the washroom before leaving. The store's employees smelled the smoke and called the fire department. No one was injured and damage to the washroom area was limited to smoke damage. On Saturday, May 16 at 8:43 p.m., the same day care centre on Shepard Road was broken into through a forced open window and a fire was set inside. No one was injured in the fire and the damage to the building was largely limited to smoke damage. Due to the close time frame of these three incidents, police feel these incidents are related and would like assistance from the public in identifying those responsible. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate this incident and anyone with information related to it is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825 4747, ext. 2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222 TIPS (8477).
