OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 20, 2009 · 18 MercedesBenz E-Class Coupe added to lineup Continued from Page 17 sedan, and a standard feature, is the new Attention Assist drowsiness monitor that keeps an electronic eye on the driver and warns him/her by a series of visual and optical warnings when it's time to take a break. Another is Adaptive Highbeam Assist that uses a camera molded into the windshield that "sees" the headlights of on-coming vehicles and adjusts between low and high beam accordingly. And then there is the optional Distronic Plus that improves on the radar distance ranging system. It keeps your E-Coupe at a pre-determined distance from the car ahead regardless of speed. If the car in front comes to a full stop, so will you without ever touching the brake pedal. The interior is what you expect from a Mercedes-Benz premium sedan with the finest leathers and woods all fitted so precisely that it would be hard to run a scalpel between them. Mercedes is very proud of the look of its new seats that would not be out of place as furniture in a custom decorated home. After its initial mind-numbing complexity when it first appeared inside Mercedes' cabin, the Comand infotainment system is now easier to use. Not intuitive mind you, but better. Using a rotary knob on the transmission tunnel you can scroll and click your way through a myriad of items such as audio, climate control, engine info and diagnostics and a navigation system that is standard on the V8, optional on the V6. The centre-dash mounted display is now a seven-inch, high-resolution unit that is easy to see and understand even in strong sunlight. As this is being written, Mercedes Canada and Germany were haggling over prices with Breitschwerdt no doubt fighting head office every inch of the way for the kind of content/pricing that will attract Canadians. But when it arrives in Canadian showrooms this summer, be prepared for probably the best E-Class Coupe ever.
