OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 20, 2009 · 10 Literacy Council's used book sale starts Thursday The Oakville Literacy Council's used book sale kicks off Thursday at Hopedale Mall. "The book sale raises essential operating dollars for our program," said Bernie Martenson, president of the council. "But it also gives us a wonderful way to let the community know how we help." The Oakville Literacy Council is a non-profit, volunteer organization providing free, oneon-one tutoring to adults who want to improve their reading, writing and math skills for further independence, or better opportunities in education and employment. Enrolment has been growing in the last year; more than 50 adult students are matched with tutors right now. The book sale is at Hopedale Mall from Thursday, May 21 to Saturday, May 23 during mall hours: 9:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 9:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Pocketbooks and children's books cost $1, and most other hardcover and softcover books cost $3. There are always a few specially priced books, as well. "We have to say thank you to all the people in Oakville who donated books for our sale," Martenson said. The Oakville Literacy Council is funded in part by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and United Way of Oakville. The book sale is supported by local Starbucks stores and Boston Pizza Dorval.
