15 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 14, 2009 Health Oakville Beaver Plan to camp out at Appleby College June 5 for Relay for Life Relay for Life, the Canadian Cancer Society's overnight fundraiser, is set for Friday, June 5. It will take place from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Appleby College on Lakeshore Road, just east of Fourth Line. The fundraiser is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for the disease. Last year, the Oakville Relay raised more than $480,000. It involved 150 teams, 1,580 people and 183 cancer survivors. Teams can register by calling the Oakville Unit at 845-5231 or online at www.cancer.ca/relay. For more information, visit www.cancer.ca/relay. Relay For Life starts at dusk and ends the next morning -- paralleling the journey of a patient with cancer. Teams choose names, some even dress in costume. After setting up their campsite, team members take turns walking the relay track amid entertainment and activities. It all begins with a survivors' lap and continues through the night amid glowing luminaries dedicated to those who have fought or are battling cancer and wraps up the following morning. For the past 11 months, Burlington has had the answer to many of our communities' physiological needs. The HealthSCAN Digital Thermography Clinic located at The Foot and Health Centre on Burloak Road can provide clients with a screening method of detecting abnormalities in the skin tissue and temperature that may relate to cancer, disease, nameless medical conditions and unexplained pain...Thermography. The Burloak clinic is one of the only Ontario Thermography clinics to use the latest technology for thermographic imaging. Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) - is a non-invasive test that uses an infra-red camera to measure and pinpoint abnormal skin temperatures, which can indicate abnormalities in the breast tissue and numerous physiological problems. The camera gauges body tissue heat energy that is reflected on a high-speed computer for imaging. Generally "problem areas" show high temperatures due to increased blood flow and increased metabolic activity. The imaging is then downloaded and sent for interpretation by physicians trained by the American College of Clinical Thermography associated with Duke University Medical Centre. This report can be forwarded on to your health practitioner. How has this revolutionary screening process escaped us? Director Kathy Pye and Clinic Director Janice Holmes CCT, CAT(C) recognized the absence of this technology in Canada and made it their mission to open a clinic that could service the GTA and surrounding areas. "Thermography is considered to be a mainstream test of physiology in the United States, England, Australia, New Zealand and other countries throughout Asia and is FDA approved," says Pye. Pye is a wellness expert. Practicing for 15 years, she is an accredited doctor of Acupuncture and Homeopathy, as well as a certified constitutional facial rejuvenation practitioner. Kathy Pye has been passionate about bringing Thermography to Ontario. "This cutting edge technology may be a potential leader in early breast screening." Breast Thermography may detect functional changes in breast tissue before tumors form and when the tumors could be too small to be detected with X-rays. Completely non-intrusive and void of radiation, compression, contact or needles, the process is comfortable and exact. Says Pye, "Screening of the breast may detect the possibility of physiological problems within 6-8 years prior to an abnormality picked up on a mammogram." Particularly useful during early phases of rapid tumor growth, Thermography can be used for women of all ages and with all types of breast tissue. "It is especially effective when dealing with young or dense breasts." However, Pye says, "Breast thermography is not a replacement for mammography or any other form of breast imaging". Certified in clinical Thermography, Janice Holmes and Pye believe in preventive health care. It just made sense to establish a clinic specializing in Thermography. The clinic offers a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere with skilled technicians and an RN on staff. Providing comfort and knowledge, they are a caring and professional group of people who have one common interest.... to address your overall physical and mental well-being. A dream come true for women with breast issues, Thermography is also a welcome aid for diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring therapy progress for conditions that include back injuries, arthritis, headache, nerve damage, Fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, disc disease, unexplained pain, referred pain syndrome, sprains, strains, stroke screening, whiplash and digestive disorders. Says Pye, "The test is phenomenal as it gives a true reading through thermal imaging of how your body is doing in real time." "Physiology is dynamic.... while anatomy is static," explains Pye, "Thermography gives an immediate picture of any inflammation of the muscle or fiber...the scan shows a picture of the patient's actual pain location." We are in a time where disease and aging problems are too rapidly treated with medication. Taking hold of our own health issues is not only responsible but necessary in today`s society. The HealthSCAN Digital Thermography Clinic is an enormous gift to us all. It can be one of the first steps towards achieving a lifetime of wellness... the clinic always recommends that you include your health practitioner in any decisions regarding your health. Thermography technology could work hand in hand with existing medical technologies. For more information contact HealthSCAN Digital Thermography Clinic at 905-220-0383.
